Calvin S. & JeNeal N. Hatch Prize in Teaching

Deadline: Monday, October 13, 2025

BASIC CRITERIA

The Calvin S. and JeNeal N. Hatch Prize in Teaching is provided by an endowment given to the University of Utah by Mr. and Mrs. Hatch. The purpose of the prize is to recognize an outstanding teacher at the University of Utah and to "make a contribution to teaching, the dissemination of knowledge, and to improve our ability to communicate with each other."

Eligible faculty members must be from Tenure-line faculty ranks. Previous recipients of the Hatch Prize are not eligible for nomination. Recipients of other University-wide teaching awards must wait five years prior to being eligible for consideration.

CRITERIA FOR AWARDING THE PRIZE

The prize will be awarded for excellence in teaching over an extended period of time. The prize is usually awarded to an outstanding faculty member who has been teaching at the University of Utah for at least 20 years. The Committee recognizes aspects of teaching such as: increased learning by students, unusual motivation and stimulation of students to seek greater learning, evidence of unusual concern for students, development of innovative methods, introduction and inventiveness of new courses, noteworthy expertise in a given field of study, effectiveness of presentation, and other exemplary contributions to university education.

THE PRIZE

The prize is $5,000 to be disbursed as the recipient chooses. For example, the amount may be entirely in cash, a drawing account in support of the recipient's teaching activities, or a combination of both.

NOMINATORS

Nominations may be submitted by any department, college, academic organization of the University of Utah, or by any student, alumnus/alumna, or any individual member of the University community.

After screening nominations for eligibility, the Teaching Committee will ask nominees to assemble and submit their portfolio and arrange for letters of recommendation. Please do not ask multiple people to submit nomination forms. Only one form is needed, and letters of support will be solicited at a later date.

Nominations must be submitted by Monday, October 13, 2025. The University Teaching Committee is unable to accept late or incomplete nominations.
If you have any questions, please email karen.west@utah.edu or call 801-581-3088. Awards will be announced upon approval of the Academic Senate and Board of Trustees in February 2026.
